Mary Margaret with brother Keith Ruddell, studied together at Columbia University in New York City. She earned a Masters of Fine Arts, following undergraduate at Butler University, in Indianapolis where she majored in music. Keith embarked on a career in general surgery.

Mary Margaret and Keith's parents, Karl R. Ruddell and Margaret (Hannon) Ruddell, at their home in downtown Indianapolis. Together they had three children, Mary Margaret, Keith and Robert Ruddell.
