Emily (Howe) Mead was above all else a good wife, mother and sister. She was born the oldest child of  William Howe and Jane Ruddell. May 24,1827. At 18 yrs old, she married William Mead who was born in New York 1811.

They married on Nov 13, 1845 in Patriot, Switzerland Co., Indiana and had 6 children .

David died at 4 yrs, Ann b. 1848 died young, Edwin H. Mead 1849, Charles Mead 1853, Jennie Mead 1860, and Pauline Mead 1862 (these last 4 children named after her brothers, her mother and sister). William Mead was a sheriff 1859-1863, he volunteered in Co D, 10th Indiana Cavalry from 1863 till 1865.

Emily 's children were 14, 10, 3 and  1 yr old when William Mead went off to war- fighting in Alabama, and the Battle  of Vicksburg, Mississippi for the Union. William and Emily's sons studied to be a Pharmacist and a Printer.

Emily's mother Jane (Ruddell) Howe died December 16 1863 in Crawford County Illinois, and her father died in 1874, as did her husband, the same year.

She moved to Illinois to be with her sisters and brothers. By 1900 Emily traveled back to Indiana, where she took care of her brother Thomas K Howe, and her daughter Jennie. Emily died September 6, 1903 in Indiana.
